LOS ANGELES—Mr. Daniel Quocbinh, a news anchor for radio VNCR 61.3 FM, a Vietnamese community radio station in Orange County, California, was at the Shen Yun Performing Arts Saturday performance at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, The Music Center, along with one of the radio announcers, Mr. JD Huang. Both of them have worked in the television industry as well.
“I was really surprised, because this is the first time I’ve been to the show,” said Mr. Quocbinh.
Both Mr. Quocbinh and Mr. Huang had seen the advertising for Shen Yun but had never seen the show before. This year they were invited by a friend. They both felt that seeing Shen Yun would change their lives forever.
Mr. Huang said, “It took me by surprise … I had no clue." Then he said, "It just blew me away."
“The dance is truly more than entertainment,” he continued trying to express his appreciation.
“It is very effective. The dancing and everything. The costume is just something.”
Shen Yun tours the world with dancers, singers, musicians and a live orchestra of traditional Chinese and western instruments. Mr. Huang had not expected a live orchestra, and was enthralled by it and what the orchestra added to the depth of the performance.
“I found out during intermission that the music was live—It blew me away too!”
Mr. Huang also appreciated the performances depicting modern day China where practitioners of Falun Gong are persecuted for practicing peaceful meditation and following the tenants of truthfulness, compassion and tolerance.
“There is a message and at one time I almost cried at the scene of the mother and the daughter.”
Mr. Huang felt from the first scene that there was an important, profound message for him and for humankind in Shen Yun. “I had that feeling I’m going to get some message here," he said.
He remarked that he felt, as each song was performed and he read the words on the screen, that the performance was meant to inspire, to change the world, to change the Chinese and to change the Americans and to change the world.
“And you want me to take some time to look at this, even after the show. And if that’s the effect, I think you succeeded,” he commented.
He was so inspired by the hearts of the Falun Gong practitioners who were being persecuted, how they refused to give up their faith under such conditions, he now wants to learn the practice himself.
In summing up Mr. Huang said, “I feel lucky that I got invited to see this spectacular show that is so… wonderful. It’s great. Thank you.”
Mr. Quocbinh was also moved by Shen Yun, he felt it was a lesson in true authentic Chinese culture, it showed the path of where all Asians have come from.
“I learned a lot today because of the music, the culture, the costume.
“I like the music, because you learn, you heard about the history of China. But besides history, you learn about modern times too.”
With Chinese New Year coming soon, which is in Mr. Quocbinh’s heritage, he felt that seeing Shen Yun was the best gift anyone could have. It was a wonderful time for him.
Mr. Quocbinh was touched to hear that the dancers come from many countries around the world and that most are of Chinese descent, now living in New York and dancing for Shen Yun. He appreciated their dedication to their performances and how they all worked as a team.
“That’s why they have to be perfect, for the whole team to look good on stage. This is a really good message for young people out there, especially for Chinese people to live abroad, to know how to keep customs, to go back to history."
Mr. Quocbinh was also particularly moved by the dance about the Falun Gong practitioners. He said, “You know the scene of the girl trying to save her mom, and I know a lot in the history, but this one really touching, really wonderful, and I think that’s a spectacular show.”
Mr. Quocbinh felt Shen Yun is “a really great show for us, for rest of the world, Americans, Vietnamese, you know all kind of people in the world know how Chinese people [are]."
He is saddened by what he sees the Chinese Communist Party doing to China. He made a very clear distinction between the Chinese people and the Chinese Communist Party.
“Thank you very much”, for bringing Shen Yun to Los Angeles he concluded.
With reporting by NTDTV.
